BREN'S STORY

My journey into small business wasn’t planned—it was a necessity. I dropped out of high school at 15, thinking I could take on the world, but life quickly showed me otherwise. By 21, I was married, a new mother, and suddenly thrust into the family business. We were woefully unprepared for the reality of balancing work, motherhood, and the financial pressures that came with a struggling business. My husband worked six, sometimes seven, days a week, and we still found ourselves with customers who couldn’t pay. In place of money, we often received produce from market gardeners—vegetables, fruits, whatever they could spare.

Family holidays were a luxury we couldn’t afford. Instead, Christmas gifts were homemade biscuits and chocolates, and our version of a family trip was a day at the beach with a picnic. To make ends meet, I worked multiple part-time jobs while raising our four boys, often feeling like there simply weren’t enough hours in the day.

At 37, after years of juggling the demands of family and business, I decided it was time to go back to school. It was my first time attending university, and balancing my studies with raising a family was no easy feat. But I was determined to create a better future for us all. Through hard work and perseverance, I gained the education I needed to complement the life lessons I’d already learned the hard way.
